30 Day Gluten Challenge March 11, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennynic @ 10:37 am

So the doctor said I needed to go back on gluten (wheat, barley, oats, rye) for four weeks in preparation for an endoscopy of my small intestine. This was after 5 months of  feeling great on a gluten free diet and watching a bunch of random symptoms disappear. I prepared myself for the worst, started dreaming about flaky buttery biscuits and came up with this list to ensure I made the most of this four week adventure. Even though I reintroduced gradually, I was hit with debilitating migraines from the start and extreme fatigue that left me bed ridden for a good part of the first week. Then I seemed to hit a plateau, and things started to get “normal” again, despite the fact that I looked three months pregnant from the bloating. I’m down to 12 days left in the challenge (who’s counting?) and trying to make the most of each one. I’ve crossed a number of items off of my list, but still have quite a bit of work left to do.

Tina Fey for Veep September 12, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennynic @ 11:28 pm

Friday night. My dinner plans had fallen through at the last minute. The backup plan, a girls’ shopping trip that resulted in impulsively buying a Way Too Short skirt at the Gap, ended shortly before 9. A little too early to retire for a Friday night. I decided to take advantage of the in-store exchange at Blockbuster. My favorite weekend clerk happened to be on duty. There are two reasons why he’s my favorite. If he tells me that my rental is a good one, I can pretty much guarantee success. And he’s a big fan of Heroes. We have, on a particularly slow night for Blockbuster, discussed our favorite characters.

So even though I was in a different line, I waved Baby Mama in his direction and asked if it was a good pick. “Oh yeah, that’s a funny one,” he said. “Tina Fey is so witty and sarcastic. I just have to say ‘I love you, Tina Fey’.”

I couldn’t help myself. “Is that how you feel about Sarah Palin, too?” I asked. The look on his face was a mix between horror, disgust and amusement. He was, for a moment, speechless. The clerk scanning my Blockbuster card gave me a high five in glee.

“There’s nothing wrong with Sarah Palin,” said a woman in the other line. My favorite issued a stream of humorously idle threats about adding miscellaneous fees to my account as I slowly retreated into the parking lot, where I noticed the husband in a Chevy suburban with a W sticker waiting for the woman in the other line.
